1928 RCA Radiola 18

What a find!

Found this gem at a peddlers’s mall! All the tubes seems to be intact (cursory glance at the getters), though the cords are dry rotted, and the inside has a lot of surface rust. Haven’t plugged it in yet because I don’t want to accidentally cause a fire or worse … harm the tubes. I pulled a schematic from the champs over at the radio museum and it has a simple pre-superheterodyne design called TRF (tuned radio frequency) which seems super finicky if not for the enormous triple ganged vari-cap tied to the tuning knob via a pulley. This cap is immaculate, its like the size of half a pringles can.

From the other restores I’ve seen on YouTube, it seems the paper caps are super easy to replace with  modern film caps so thats good. The thing I evidently have to worry about is the many transformers that the device has that are almost all potted with tar. This essentially makes them unserviceable. Luckily what ever radio I have that’s the oldest gets the most TLC so if the transformers are shot, I’ll wind new ones like an insane person. Will update as the restore continues!
